What is an energy boost?
It isn't an easy task to define an "energy boost".
The word ENERGY is defined as: the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources.

What causes the mental alertness that accompanies an energy boost?
Your brain activity is controlled by chemicals called neurotransmitters, which either stimulate brain cells or quiet them. Adenosine is a quieting neurotransmitter. Caffeine attaches to adenosine receptors on your brain cells, blocking the quieting effect of this neurotransmitter. The net effect of caffeine, therefore, is stimulation. The increased activity of your brain cells under the influence of caffeine leads to a secondary rise in the amount of epinephrine in your body. Epinephrine is the "fight or flight" hormone, which has stimulating effects on your brain and body.
There is also adrenaline. Adrenaline is a hormone produced by the body that is secreted through the adrenal glands. It is released into the blood stream in conditions of stress, increasing rates of blood circulation, breathing, and carbohydrate metabolism and preparing muscles for exertion. Some people who are "thrill seekers" find ways to excite themselves in daring stunts to get an adrenaline rush.
Is caffeine safe?
According to the Mayo Clinic up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That's roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola or two "energy shot" drinks.
Are there other stimulants that can be used to create energy?
