Overview

Why is Sleep so Important?

There are so many reasons that sleep can be illusive or even non existent. Sleep is important to both your mental and you physical health. Without that full REM (Rapid Eye Movement) state sleep a person can become mentally confused and physically unable to endure the menial tasks each of us have to an a daily basis. Just as much as sleep can have an effect on your physical and mental well-being it can also be effected by either physical or mental issues.

Some of the mental issues that can cause a loss of sleep are pretty obvious. Stress and nervous tension top the list of those issues. Physically, pain, allergies - nasal issues, asthma and stomach issues can all be the root cause of a sleepless night.

Scientists have also been looking into the cycle of the brain. They are saying that your brain actually has a sleep and an awake cycle that need to be balanced in order to obtain a great night's sleep. They are also looking into other causes of insomnia. Did you kno that medications such as those taken for the common cold and nasal allergies, high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, birth control, asthma, and depression can also cause insomnia.

That's a brief look at the causes... What about the effects of insomnia?

Insomnia is being related to issues like depression and anxiety. The nasty thing about either of these conditions is that they are both self perpetuating when they are coupled with insomnia. For example a person might lose sleep for a few nights because they are anxious about a stressful future event. The anxiety causes a loss of sleep the the loss of sleep causes more anxiety. In fact a person might even become anxious because they know or feel that they are going to have trouble sleeping.  Mental phatigue from the loss of sleep can also be the beginning of a bout with some depression issues.

Insomnia can also be linked to poor physical performance. It is said that the lack of sleep literally "dumb' you down". Sleep plays a critical role in thinking and learning. Lack of sleep hurts these cognitive processes in many ways. First, it impairs attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning, and problem solving. The lack of sleep is also a big public safety hazard every day on the road. Drowsiness can slow reaction time as much as driving drunk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that fatigue is a cause in 100,000 automobile accidents and 1,550 automobile accident related deaths a year in the U.S. Here's something you wouldn't suspect that sleep deprivation causes. Sleep specialists say that sleep-deprived men and women report lower libidos and less interest in sex. Depleted energy, sleepiness, and increased tension may be largely to blame.
